High-Speed Robotics

The Symphoni™ Robot

The workhorse of Symphoni™ technology is its versatile delta robot. With precise multi-axis motions and robust construction,
the Symphoni robot perfectly blends speed and power. Moving in
the x and z planes at high speeds, it executes operations with startling efficiency. When equipped with servo-driven end effectors, it picks up randomly oriented parts and rotates them to precise radial position with friction-free contact. When equipped with an optional tilt axis, it can invert parts or carry out assembly tasks at selectable angles.

Unlike general use “spider” robots, the Symphoni robot can handle high forces. Its arms have been optimized through finite element analysis
for minimum mass and maximum strength, giving it the nimbleness to stroke at high rates and the power for heavy-duty operations.

Best of all, the Symphoni robot is easy to use, its motions configured with selectable profiles pre-programmed for common assembly tasks.

“Speed, force, and efficiency are the hallmarks of the Symphoni™ robot.”

Standard, Pre-Engineered Design

Up to two Symphoni robots can be pre-packaged in a module. Motion control is local, managed by the module’s embedded control hardware and Symphoni™ OS software.)

The Pick-and-Place Station

Most assembly systems feature pick-and-place stations in which components received from external feed systems are placed onto a pallet and/or assembled to another component. The Symphoni robot carries out pick-and-place operations with unmatched speed and efficiency, coordinating its own movements with the numerically controlled movements of other devices including a SuperTrak CONVEYANCE™ pallet and an RSM Technology® Disc.

Configurable End-of-Arm Tooling

Symphoni robots are configured by equipping them with a standard end-of-arm “deck” and part-specific touch tooling, as shown in the image below.

There are numerous decks to choose from, depending on whether additional axes of motion are needed for orientation or inversion; whether the operation is to be carried out 1-up, 2-up, or 4-up; and on the type of grippers desired.

Pre-Programmed Motion Profiles

Although the Symphoni robot can be programmed to execute a vast array of customized movements, it can also be quickly configured to follow commonly used motion profiles. These standard movements are selectable from a library, making “programming” a snap. Specific pick-and-place points can then be dialed in within defined limits in 0.01 mm increments.

Powerful Performance

The Symphoni robot can cycle between an RSM Technology® Disc and a SuperTrak CONVEYANCE™ pallet at up to 200 strokes per minute. It can be configured for 1-up, 2-up, or 4-up operation, multiplying its throughput rate. For ultra-high-output applications, two or more identically configured robots can operate in parallel, achieving production rates of more than 1000 parts per minute.

Radial orientation of incoming parts is carried out at the rates described above. Parts are captured in an RSM Technology® Disc, which presents them one-by-one to a vision camera that detects their orientation. The robot picks the parts from the Disc and then rotates them individually to the correct radial position during its movement to the SuperTrak CONVEYANCE™ pallet.

A second vision camera can be added to inspect parts in the RSM Technology® Disc Faulty parts – e.g., those with short shots or excessive flash – are rejected from the Disc into a local reject bin. In this manner, bad parts are prevented from entering the machine.
